Conservators Report 1985: Bagnowka Jewish Cemetery, Bialystok, Poland

The contents of the Conservator’s Report include: preliminary information; list of materials used for the study; details on the cemetery’s location; history of the cemetery; cemetery characteristics, which includes layout, vegetation and current conditions; analysis of sepulchral monuments with unique inscriptions and discussion of the symbols on Bagnowka stones; list of select gravestones in Sections 1, 2, 3, 4 and 23 (now 18); and, finally, conservator’s conclusions and recommendations.

An English translation-in-progress is posted here alongside a Xerox of the Polish report, which, unfortunately, betrays the challenge of copying such a document, especially the photographs that accompany the written text. While my Polish language skills – at least in reading, are improving, select vocabulary and technical language still require professional assistance. As these clarifications are received the English document will be updated. In most cases, the occasional translational awkwardness does not alter the factual details.
