In Memoriam: Honoring Frank J. Idzikowski

On December 31, 2024, Frank J. Idzikowski, passed away. Frank was my partner in all adventures for 47 years, a loving father to Sara (Evan) and Alex (Kevin) and devoted grandfather to Sophia and Erika. Frank’s career spanned a variety of federal agencies with his last 20+ years dedicated to helping veterans through the Veterans Administration in Seattle. His two tours in Vietnam in the Army fueled his desire to forever help fellow veterans. Frank was also a 20-year volunteer involved in the restoration of Bagnowka Jewish Cemetery in Bialystok. In addition to his hands on work each August in Bialystok, Frank’s investigative abilities were integral to many of my research projects.

Last Spring, Frank discovered fascinating historic letters in the YIVO Archives, which contain late 19th Century Hebrew epitaphs from then Russia – now current day Eastern Poland. My current article, “From Białystok to Chisinau”: Dubnov’s Grave Inscriptions and Their Significance for Russian Jewish Historiography and Cemetery Studies,” just published in the prestigious Judaica Russica, is the fruit of his discovery. This article is dedicated to my irreplaceable husband, colleague, and friend.
