In 2017, Bagnowka: A Modern Jewish Cemetery on the Russian Pale was published. Since then substantial restoration efforts on Bagnowka and an incredible release of digital and scanned documents have necessitated updates and revisions to this volume. Two significant advancements to the history of Bagnowka are (1) historical evidence that this cemetery was destroyed post-World War II when Bialystok was under Communist control; and (2) a clearer understanding of the number of burials and the number of tombstones that remain in Bagnowka today. Death records suggest that 35-42,000 Jewish deaths occurred during the operational time of this cemetery. While the structure of this cemetery permits this potential number of burials, the actual number of burials is closer to 20-25,000, given that part of the sanctified land was never used. As for the number of extant tombstones, currently restored sections and the remaining sections suggest 7000 tombstones remain. However, ground penetrating radar will be used beginning in 2027 to explore areas that appear vacant of any burials. It is hoped that this technology will push the total of remaining tombstones closer to 10,000.
